Nevernight (Book) : Kristoff, Jay : In a world where the suns almost never set, a woman gains entry to a school of infamous assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers that destroyed her family. It was inside him – she was inside him – stabbing hard as he tried to cry out, her hand over his mouth to muffle the flood. While I understand what Kristoff was going for here (in having Nevernight be a historical documentation of Mia’s journey, rather than a current telling), I simply found that the footnotes took me out of the story. Brief Summary: In a world of three suns where only true darkness happens every two years, a young girl – a child of a failed rebellion – makes her first kill in order to join the fabled Red Church – an assassin school. Although I'm not particularly thrilled to immerse myself into another lengthy story crammed with figurative descriptions anytime soon, Kristoff's storytelling abilities have persuaded me to at least consider reading the sequels. This is my first book by Jay Kristoff, but I was totally immersed from the first sentence. From this point on the discussion in this review will feature spoilers – if you have not read Nevernight, I recommend ceasing your reading now and coming back once you’ve finished the book! As other reviewers have noted, there is something odd about a man in his 40s taking on the role of a 16-year-old girl (besides the sexual gymnastics Mia engages in, where it is better not to think about this being written by a man in his 40s), and part of that is that her voice doesn't feel her own. Overall, I'm excited to read the sequel, even if it means I have to brace myself before I jump back into that narration. In a world of three suns where only true darkness happens every two years, a young girl – a child of a failed rebellion – makes her first kill in order to join the fabled Red Church – an assassin school. Oh, Mia may not look like the characters in those novels, but she sounds Exactly. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. So, I highly suggest adult readers only. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. Jay left me enthralled with his world and eagerly waiting to dive into Godsgrave (2nd book in the trilogy). The world-building doesn't info-dump too much, but still gives enough description that I felt like I could picture it. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. Kristoff is a masterful world builder. Suspend your disbelief and roll with the verbal punches, and you'll likely enjoy Nevernight I'd recommend reading this in ebook so you can quickly bring up the snarky footnotes and shrink them back down. In case you didn’t get it above, I love the vivid wording and age level of this story. Once she gets to the school, she trains to become a member of the church.
If she survives to initiation, she'll be inducted among the chosen of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and be one step closer to the only thing she desires. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life.
I loved this book. She has motivations that make sense, but she refuses to wallow, instead always choosing to grit her teeth and do everything with a ferocity that gives me chills. -... Read More ». ( Log Out /
It was unlike anything I’ve read thus far, and I am excited to read more from Kristoff as this plot continues. Just stick with it. They all have backstories. The very focus of the book – a young assassin with a vendetta – is definitely right up my alley for popular story tropes right now, so obviously I had to read it. The Church is constantly likened to a murderous Hogwarts and really I can't think of any better description for it.
