1. Taj Mahal, Agra (Uttar Pradesh)

Situated in the ancient city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Taj Mahal is one of the modern seven wonders of the world. An epitome of Moghul architecture, the Taj Mahal has a perfectly architected symmetry. This mausoleum, situated on the banks of the River Yamuna, was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It is considered to be an epitome of love since the bereaved Shah Jahan ordered it to be constructed after the passing of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal took eleven years to build and it housed the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site will leave you spellbound when you visit it.

2. Qutub Minar (Delhi)

Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the choicest examples of the indo Muslim architecture. This 240 feet minaret showcases the beauty and intricacies of the architecture of historical India. Qutub ud Din Aibak,  the first and foremost Muslim ruler in India, had work started on the minaret in 1192. This red sandstone minar is built in an Iranian and Persian style. 

3. Amer Fort, Jaipur (Rajasthan)

Amer Fort, located at a distance of 10 kilometers from Jaipur, is a fort on the hill Cheel Ka Tila. The Sheesh Mahal is one of the major attractions of this fort. The Sheesh Mahal or the Mirror Palace has walls that covered with numerous pieces of mirrors. The famous Bollywood classic song Jab Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya from Mughal E Alam was shot in this very location. The fort which overlooks Maota lake also houses Deewan E Khas and Deewan E Aam.

4. Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Aurangabad (Maharashtra)

Ajanta and Ellora Caves consist of rock cut sculptures with each one being carved by hand. The group of 29 and 34 caves in Ajanta and Ellora respectively depict the reincarnations of Lord Buddha through murals, carvings, and sculptures. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was discovered by a British Officer named John Smith in 1819 on accident. Ellora caves are unique in the way that they are a blend of three distinct religions- Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. 17 caves are devoted to Hinduism, 12 to Buddhism, and 5 to Jainism. 

5. Virupaksha Temple, Hampi (Karnataka)

Situated around 350 Kilometres from Bangalore, in the city of Hampi, Virupaksha Temple is not only one of the famous historical monuments in India but it is also a popular pilgrimage destination. Dedicated to Virupaksha, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, it was built by Lakkan Dandesa. A chariot festival is celebrated every year in the month of February. when in Hampi, make sure that you go during the festival as it is one of the most amazing features of this place.

6. Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu)

People who enjoy history and Dravidian style temples should visit Mahabalipuram. The antique cut rocks along with the cave sanctuaries and chariots make it one of the most famous historical places in India. Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram was constructed under the administration of the Pallavas in the seventh century.  The Shore Temple is a standout amongst the most mainstream landmarks of Mahabalipuram. It consists of Dravidian-style sanctuaries which are devoted to Lord Shiva. The stone carvings clearly show the superb Pallava craftsmanship.  

7. Konark Temple (Odisha)

The Konark Temple in Odisha which is an ode to the God of the sun was built by King Narasimhadeva I. He was one of the greatest rulers of the Ganga Dynasty. The temple is a result of the hard work of 1200 artisans. Dedicated to the  Lord Surya, the Konark Temple is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not to mention, it was starred in the list of Seven Wonders of India. The Khandolite rocks add more charm and beauty to the temple.

8. Sanchi Stupa, Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh)

The Sanchi Stupa in Madhya Pradesh is an exceptional example of the Buddhist style of architecture.The dome-shaped structure of the stupa contains ancient relics of Buddha. With carvings in the Stupa depict the tales of the life of Lord Buddha. They are not only intricate but also mesmerizing. The Stupa is 54 feet high and looks glorious. Every day thousands of people throng this majestic piece which depicts the history of India. It was built by Muryan Ruler Ashoka in the 3rd Century BC. It also has the status of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

9. Victoria Memorial, Kolkata (West Bengal)

Victoria Memorial, situated in the capital of the West Bengal Kolkata, is one of the most famous historical monuments of India. Although it remains closed on Mondays, on the rest of the days it opens at 10 am and closes and 5 pm. Situated in the heart of the city, this monument is dedicated to Queen Victoria of England. Designed by Sir William Emerson, it contains lush gardens, sculptures, statues, paintings and other artifacts. The statue named as Angel Of Victory is the center of attraction of Victoria Memorial.

10. Mysore Palace, Mysore (Karnataka)

Mysore place, the former resident of a myriad of rulers, was built in 1912. Lord Henry Irwin who was  British architect built this place. This palace turned museum is a historic marvel. It is one of the most famous historical places in the city of Palaces, Mysore. The Wodeyar Dynasty stayed here for decades. It is also known by the name of Amba Vilas Palace.
